NotebookCheck | Mike Wobker

Nokia 4.2 presents itself as a reliable smartphone at an affordable price. Despite the small storage equipment, the system runs smoothly and has no difficulties running simple everyday apps.

India Today | Sanket Vijayasarathy

... the Nokia 4.2 isn't the fastest phone that you can get at this price point and neither does it offer a great set of cameras. In fact, the price of the Nokia 4.2 could have been much better.

As a potential buyer, if you do not play mobile games and are willing to condone the fact that the Nokia 4.2 cameras a are not competent enough to take clear night shots, the phone is right up your alley

For its price range, the phone stands out because of its design, clean UI (stock Android) and smooth performance. People who want a small compact handset and prefer stock Android can consider Nokia 4.2.

... the Nokia 4.2 won't disappoint you with its design, display, or day-to-day performance. It's only when you consider the competition, you realise that the 4.2 isn't the best option out there, given its asking price.

What you do get here is a stylish premium-feeling no-frills design, decent performance for everyday tasks and a clean Android interface. The Nokia 4.2 is not going to blow you away with impressive speeds or stellar photographs, but as a budget phone, it's seemingly well equipped. For a more hardcore user, I'd suggest you look at Redmi Y3, Realme 3 if you're unwilling to flinch with your budget.

Digital Trends | Julian Chokkattu

The Nokia 4.2's good looks, great battery life, decent camera, and speedy Android updates are held back by a weak processor. It's capable, but there are better alternatives.

Android Central | Ara Wagoner

Nokia delivers a phone that punches above its budget price tag. Between a nifty Google Assistant button and a glowing LED power button sits a compact Android One phone that's the perfect size for one-handed use during long days and longer nights.

Tom's Guide | Adam Ismail

The performance is middling, the battery life is so-so and the cameras will never impress you. That's not to say the phone is downright bad in any of those respects, but rather that you are simply getting what you pay for.

TechRadar | Jon Mundy

While it looks and feels great in the hand, Nokia appears to have cut back a little too much when it comes to everyday performance. The Nokia 4.2 simply doesn't perform as well as its classy design suggests it should.

... when the Nokia 4.2's issues are this plentiful – and the Moto G7 Play does things better in almost every regard – it struggles to earn a recommendation.

NDTV Gadgets | Nadeem Sarwar

The Nokia 4.2 aims to build on the momentum created by some of its well-received siblings such as the Nokia 6.1 Plus (Review) and the Nokia 7 Plus (Review), but fails on multiple grounds...Compared to lower-priced rivals such as the Redmi Note 7 (Review) and the Realme 3 (Review), the Nokia 4.2 is quite underwhelming, both in terms of hardware specifications and the overall experience.

Australian PC World | Fergus Halliday

The Nokia 4.2 is a decent budget smartphone when it comes to the essential but it falls off hard if you expect anything more from it.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
