Expert Reviews | Nathan Spendelow

The Mi 9's positives are numerous; its screen is above reproach (even for the most discerning of eyeballs), it outperforms practically every other smartphone currently on the market, and that 48-megapixel camera is a terrific photographer's companion, too....the very pinnacle of smartphone technology, and I'm simply astounded that it does things this well, while costing so little in return.

The price, performance and camera offered up by the Mi 9 should have purveyors of more costly rivals such as Apple, Huawei and Samsung worried.

The real rival of the stars of Samsung, Apple and Huawei is here... can meet the needs of any user, even the most demanding...Qualcomm's latest processor, an in-display fingerprint reader and facial unlocking, a triple rear camera with 48 MP Sony lens and wide angle lens, fast charging, wireless charging, NFC...

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is a fantastic all-round device, offering many of the bells and whistles of high-end phones but without the price tag.

Offering, powerful hardware and a good camera experience, the Mi 9 is let down by the software experience, but at this price, it's one of the most compelling phones of 2019.

Android Authority | Adam Sinicki

While it's lacking one or two premium features, the Xiaomi Mi 9 basically picks the best qualities of a 2019 flagship and sticks them into a well-made, affordable package... A fantastic start to 2019 flagships.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is the smartphone to buy if you are after a flagship experience but on a budget. It offers everything that its competitors do but without needing to spend a fortune.

Now it's time to mention the biggest factor in favor of the Mi 9: the price. So while the Mi 9 has some drawbacks, the value you're getting is immense.

The Mi 9 isn't perfect. The phone doesn't have a headphone jack, for instance, and can't survive underwater. If you can live with the software, though -- or don't mind using a third-party launcher -- this phone is ridiculously good value

Overall, I think the Xiaomi Mi9 is a fantastic device with the only real and possible deal-breaking compromise being its low-light photography.

Overall though, the Xiaomi Mi 9 comes out well in credit when you weigh the pros against the cons. If you're looking for a phone with flagship performance and looks, but don't want to pay the sort of prices a Galaxy or a Pixel commands, then the Mi 9 should definitely have a place on your shortlist.

Xiaomi keeps things simple, and the Mi 9 is all the better for it, if not quite perfect. This might not be a UK household name - but phones like this could turn that around.

The Xiaomi Mi 9's Snapdragon 855 chip gives it more power than you'll ever need, and it's matched by great styling, a decent battery, and a capable camera.

... Xiaomi has turned in an incredibly solid product at an extremely reasonable price, and now that the company has at least some Western presence, OnePlus and Honor should be on notice.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
