What the critics say (scores are out of 100)

What Hi-Fi?

Apart from a few minor issues, such as the absence of the 3.5mm headphone jack and the lack of waterproofing, the 7 Pro is a force to be reckoned with.

OnePlus makes an ultra-high-end phone the OnePlus way, by leaving out the fluff. Well, apart from a motorised selfie camera.

So yes, there are better value, and better cameras out there. But I think the 7 Pro has a place in the middle, and the best screen and software experience in the industry give it a compelling case.

...using the OnePlus 7 Pro doesn't feel like you have to accept any trade-offs. Indeed, past tradeoffs were minor, but there's something different about the OnePlus 7 Pro. The OnePlus 7 Pro looks, feels, and performs on the same level as a flagship-caliber phone.

A motorised front camera seems a symptom of the desperate need to innovate, but is less of a gimmick than it appears. And, all in all, the OnePlus 7 Pro is refreshingly largely free of the tech equivalent of Masterchef's carrot foams and cow's eyeball mousses.

The OnePlus 7 Pro manages to innovate in one of the most competitive technology markets out there while still circumventing convention by undercutting the majority of the competition on cost. Even if wireless charging and water resistance aren't part of the equation, It has one of the nicest displays you'll find on a phone, is a superb performer, offers great battery life and the camera is always improving.

If you're in the market for a big, new phone, it's impossible to find better value than the OnePlus 7 Pro. The gorgeous screen, killer speed, and notchless design make for a powerful, luxurious smartphone experience. And you really won't be bothered by the minor differences in low-light camera quality, considering you have all those different lenses to play with.

If you want a device for performance, best interface, gaming, display quality and content consumption, the OnePlus 7 Pro is an easy reccomendation. If they could tack on the camera of the Pixel 3 and the battery life of the Huawei P30 Pro, this would be the perfect Android phone by a long shot.

The OnePlus 7 Pro offers quite a bit of value for what the company is asking, but it's missing a few key features for which consumers might be willing to cough up the extra dough. While the display and camera versatility are much better than they were on the OnePlus 6T, the downgraded battery life, lack of wireless charging, and lack of water resistance make this an option, rather than a no-brainer.

Yes, the camera falls short of expectations, but everything else about the phone is decidedly impressive. You will not find a faster Android phone and you will not find a better display at the asking price...at least not new...I sincerely hope that the camera improves over time, because this is indeed a phone I'd otherwise love to have in my pocket.

The 7 Pro is a spec monster. And with Android phones, I usually get a little nervous when I see spec monsters. It's often a sign that the fit and finish are going to be an afterthought. But in a week or so of using the 7 Pro, I didn't feel like any corners were really cut. The screen is incredible, the cameras are respectable, and the software is clean and fast.

The OnePlus 7 Pro is, without a doubt, the company's best smartphone yet, but...it's also a far cry from the firm's wallet-friendly flagships of old...The device also comes up trumps in the performance and software stakes, offering a seamless, stripped-back user experience that's rivalled only by Google's own take on Android. And it's got the adorable pop-up selfie camera; need we say more.

Provided you can handle the fact that OnePlus is now charging the same amount of money as other companies, the OnePlus 7 Pro would be a great upgrade. But it is a phone filled with unnecessary bells and whistles, despite OnePlus's claims to the contrary, and that might be too much for some people.

The downsides are mostly related to software, and I expect OnePlus to fix them soon. The biggest disappointment is battery life, which I wish stretched out into a couple of working days, and the fact the phone is quite heavy. Other than that, OnePlus astonishingly continues its streak of creating superb phones that give us practically everything we could want, at a price that's still more affordable than the competition.

The OnePlus 7 Pro may be the most expensive phone the company's ever made, but it's still built on all of the same basics that have grown its business substantially and put it in the conversation with household names like Samsung in just a handful of years. The combination is, once again, a wonderful phone.

It definitely has scored on the design front, where it is one of the best-looking Android flagships of the year, with that amazingly classy back and that edge to edge display. Yes, there is the odd wobble in performance from time to time, but to the brand's immense credit, it has been trying to fix matters with one software update after another.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
