Although a fair bit pricier than its predecessors, the OnePlus 5 remains one of the biggest bargains on the market while still looking like a high-end device.

Both the design and technology are upgrades on previous models and while not doing anything spectacular, the OnePlus 5 is a great option for anyone looking for efficient performance without having to pay a huge price tag.

Reviewers liked:

  • The dual camera
  • The dash-charge capability
  • Its sleek appearance

Reviewers disliked:

  • Issues with WiFi connectivity
  • Poor audio quality
  • Fairly big price jump from last model

The OnePlus 5: in more detail

The OnePlus 5 certainly looks more stylish than those that have gone before it, coming in a choice of slate gray, midnight black and more recently soft gold. Their thinnest model yet, the device is just 7.25mm with a 5.5 inch screen, and has a subtle curvature that makes it comfortable to hold.

As expected nowadays, the phone has a fingerprint scanner as well as a vivid HD display, making it ideal for everything from photos to gaming.

Another area in which the OnePlus 5 has moved on is its speed and performance. The Snapdragon 835 processor, although physically smaller than its predecessor (the Snapdragon 821), runs more efficiently.

This means that there are no lagging issues when going from one app to another, even when playing more intensive games, and the 8GB of RAM is more than enough for a phone of this calibre. While the phone uses its own OxygenOS operating system, this sits on top of an android system meaning anyone familiar with an android phone will find it fairly straightforward to use.

The phone also has some innovative features which make it stand out from the crowd, including a ‘secure box’ to store private documents, photos and videos which are then only accessible with fingerprint ID or a six digit pin, and a useful reading mode which filters out blue light and uses greyscale mapping to make it less demanding on the eyes.

Camera

Probably the phone’s standout feature, the dual 20MP and 16MP back camera is a huge improvement on the previous model and allows the user to take very detailed shots which are impressively clear even when zoomed in from a distance.

Features including ‘pro mode’ – allowing you to manually alter things like shutter speed and white balance – and ‘fast autofocus’, meaning even amateur photographers will be able to capture great images with accuracy.

The camera also includes ‘portrait mode’, which separates the subject and environment by focusing on the face and gently blurring the background – and thanks to the 128GB of storage, there’s plenty of room to practice and store photos while getting to grips with everything the camera can do.

Battery

While the non-removable 3300mAh battery of the OnePlus 5 is pretty much on par with other phones on the market, lasting about a day with average usage, the dash-charge function makes it a little more impressive.

The ability to get your phone from dead to full in just over half an hour is definitely one of the phone’s biggest selling points, and unlike most other devices the phone stays cool while charging.

So, is the OnePlus 5 worth buying?

Overall, the phone has most of the features you would expect from a high-end smartphone, but there are a few elements that give away its cheaper price. The temperamental WiFi connectivity is an issue which is still to be resolved, and the inability to stream Netflix in HD is somewhat frustrating.

Those who have used previous versions of the OnePlus may find themselves asking whether there’s really enough new and improved features here to justify the steep price rise – but having said that it’s still a very affordable handset with little to complain about.

The Mirror | Jeff Parsons

The OnePlus 5 is a terrific phone and, without doubt, the best the company has ever produced. While I can't recommend the OnePlus on price alone any more, I can recommend it in terms of solid all-round ability with a great camera. The OnePlus 5 is a shining example of what a smartphone in 2017 should be.

The OnePlus 5 continues to offer the best combination of function and price, despite an increase in competition. Unbeatable value – the best mid-range smartphone in town - there's still nothing to touch it at this price.

OnePlus's enhanced price tag may come as a disappointment to those who saw the OnePlus 3 and 3T as the true mid-range leaders, but the new device raises the bar in all the right ways. If I had to pick a new Android handset today it would almost certainly be the OnePlus 5.

It's clear OnePlus is no longer the plucky upstart. It's a proper, grown up company. And the OnePlus 5 is a fitting flagship: a sophisticated, grown-up flagship that's still great value for money.

The best smartphone you might never have heard of before has just launched. The OnePlus 5 offers far more value for money than any of its rivals. It certainly isn't perfect, but it's great to use, extremely powerful and has a pleasantly loud speaker.

Easily the best value flagship smartphone in 2017 - you get all the BEST stuff that key rivals have for as much as £200 less. Yes, the price has gone up a bit from earlier models, but it is still WELL short of the competition in terms of similar spec line ups. This is easily the best OnePlus flagship to date.

OnePlus no longer is a flagship killer - it's become a bonafide Android flagship. The OnePlus 5 is a very impressive phone. It's also got something which no other Android manufacturer has, and that's a certain street cred. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you buy this phone, but it's worth looking at some of its rivals.

OnePlus have scored another goal with the OnePlus 5. It may not have been hit as ferociously towards the net as the OnePlus 3, and it might not have made a satisfying ding noise when it thuds in off the bar this time around, but it's a goal nevertheless, and in the end that perhaps is all that matters to OnePlus as they mature into a less niche smartphone brand.

As OnePlus continues to adapt to the ever-changing market, hopefully the company doesn't just fade away. That's not to say you should avoid the OnePlus 5; far from it. The OnePlus is a great phone. But thanks to its large top and bottom bezels, it looks and feels dated compare to the likes of the Galaxy S8 and LG G6. OnePlus has done a commendable effort with its fifth-generation flagship. If you want an affordable flagship handset that delivers an experience that's almost as good as today's best, the OnePlus 5 is a solid option. If you want the best-possible camera, however, you're going to have to pony up the extra cash for a U11, G6, or S8.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation.
