Expert Reviews | Jonathan Bray

The Moto G6 is a stunning budget phone. It has its shortcomings – there's a touch of lag on the camera shutter, and the screen isn't the brightest – but these aren't deal breakers.

All of which makes the Moto G6 about the easiest recommendation I can offer. Let's say you have a smartphone budget of £225: unless you can literally double your phone budget, the Moto G6 deserves to be your next handset.

The Moto G6 may not feel or run like a flagship phone, but it's not pretending to be one. The G6 offers a lot of solid features, plus extras including some fun camera features, fast charging and it all adds up to make one of the best budget handsets on the market.

The Moto G6 is another great entry in Motorola's value-packed smartphone family. That sleek redesign gets a big thumbs up from us, while the vanilla Android experience is backed by some worthy Moto features. And while the performance is limited, this handset will prove perfectly satisfying to most everyday users.

The Moto G6 feels like the natural evolution of Motorola's work in the Android smartphone space. It's a mid-tier phone that looks and feels like a premium device, with a number of caveats aimed at maintaining the phone's relatively affordable price.

Motorola is banking on a premium design and the numerous software/camera features it has to get ahead. It's a good phone, just not the kind of value one is getting used to these days.

The Moto G6 looks and feels like a phone twice its price. It has a great screen, a comfortable design, a clear speaker, and in the few weeks I've been using it, no obvious performance issues (despite its budget price and processor).

Overall the G6 represents a compelling buy-outright affordable proposition. It's premium looking, but not quite premium performing. And that's where the likes of the Nokia 6 and Honor 7C will come a-knocking.

At this price, it is safe to say that the Moto G6 is one of the best-looking smartphones you can get. For anything else, simply pick up the Redmi Note 5 Pro or ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1.

Mr Phone | Sreehari

So if you are someone who wants to have the best processor at this price and wants to play a lot of games on it then this is not the device. But if you are someone who wants a premium looking phone with a sleek design, loves to have the simplicity of stock android and doesn't mind the small issues I've mentioned in the camera, then this is probably the device to go for this.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
