"Microsoft's Lumia 950 is a good Windows 10 smartphone with decent equipment and interesting technical features"

The Lumia 950 is a wonderful device if you live in Microsoft's ecosystem it's an ideal solution. If you tend to rely on Google apps then you may find it will take some extra effort to accomplish what you need.

It's a highly capable phone, with a powerful processor, an excellent 5.2 screen, outstanding camera, plenty of memory, and good battery life. Two things let it down -its plastic build, and the scarcity of third-party apps.

Mashable | Raymond Wong

The Lumia 950 is Microsoft's best smartphone to date, and Continuum is a neat trick, but will anyone care? Probably not.

pocketnow | Michael Fisher

The Lumia 950 does very little to earn its price tag. It bears some of the least aspirational industrial design we've seen this year, and it struggles with the very fundamentals of the smartphone experience, like shooting video and checking email (email!).

MobileTechTalk | Craig Bradshaw

The Lumia 950 delivers nothing new in the design and aesthetic department whilst managing to maintain many of the staples of Lumia devices in the days of Nokia's stewardship; optics, fluidity and an intuitive UI. These all remain and have been, to a less or greater degree, improved. The device does however fail to deliver class leading battery life, and build quality, with many of the newer inclusions lacking a final polish.

Tom's Guide | Mike Prospero

The Lumia 950 is a versatile Windows 10 phone that can transform into a mini PC and that offers an excellent camera, but there's still an app gap... Get the Lumia 950 if you want a Windows Phone that can help you get real work done when connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse. The camera is also excellent, but Windows 10 still trails Android and iOS in app selection.

The Lumia 950 has a superb camera and Windows 10 Continuum is a revelation, but it's crippled by sluggish performance and a mediocre battery

TechRadar | Matt Swinder

The Lumia 950 proves that there's a lot going for Windows 10 Mobile, though also a lot of work to be done. Its best trick is that it blows up to desktop-like proportions with Continuum, but it sorely needs apps. Dedicated Microsoft fans and willing beta testers need apply.

The Journal

If you use Microsoft suite products regularly, then it makes sense to look at this. Yet the problem, and it continues to be a problem, is there is little here that will appeal to non-Windows fans. Despite the nice touches, it's hard to see why iOS and Android users would want to switch over.

There's a lot to like about the Microsoft Lumia 950. It's well built, offers a lot of freedom in the form of expandable storage and a removable battery and the operating system is familiar yet more capable.

Register Hardware | Andrew Orlowski

Overall the Lumias include some great hardware in a light package, but it's all dressed up with nowhere to go. The real world Windows 10 Mobile experience is not a good one, as the user is beset with bugs, half finished apps and needlessly fussy ways of doing things. Which is bit of a shame really.

The hardware - its lacklustre design aside - impressed with a gorgeous display, great camera and slick performance, but it's hard to overlook the lack of apps that continues to plague Microsoft's mobile operating system.

phoneArena | John V.

We're really impressed by what Microsoft is doing with the platform and with Continuum's functionality, but we surmise that something bigger, more flagship-worthy will one day or another come to light. This isn't it, that's for sure.

CNET UK | Jessica Dolcourt

The Lumia 950 is a mostly average smartphone, giving iPhone and Android users no reason to switch, and offering little appeal outside Windows phone diehards.

Ultimately, we're left with a phone that doesn't feel as expensive as it is, running software that still needs some polish and stronger app support.

Sure, Microsoft put some newer guts in it, and Windows 10 has some interesting features, but there's nothing really here that would drive anyone but the most die hard Windows fan to buy it.

Phone Scoop | Eric M. Zeman

I gotta admit it, I'm a bit disappointed with the Lumia 950. I know Microsoft could have made a better phone. It distinctly feels like Microsoft cut corners in creating this handset and purposely gimped it with a boring, non-descript design and cheap materials. There's plenty to like, but the overall value is not compelling. For it's price tag, I expected a whole lot more from the Lumia 950.

A good-enough smartphone, but there are better smartphones available unless Continuum is utterly compelling and revolutionary for your business

Pocket-lint | Chris Hall

The Microsoft Lumia 950 doesn't feel like a glittering showcase of the future of Microsoft mobile devices. It's a poor cousin to the Surface, something that seems adequately conceived rather than brilliantly executed.

Photo and screen quality are terrific, but Windows 10 feels clunky and Microsoft doesn't make up for that with jaw-dropping hardware either

The Lumia 950 will be a mere passing curiosity, a handset that looks interesting but ultimately one that misses the mark in too many ways.

The Lumia 950 has a gorgeous display, great camera and slick performance, but it's hard to overlook the lack of apps that continues to plague Microsoft's mobile operating system, and it will struggle to drag buyers away from Google and Apple.

Great camera aside, the Lumia 950 is a dull phone that doesn't do Windows 10 Mobile any favours.

Its camera and Windows 10 Continuum are fantastic, but day-to-day performance, battery life and low screen brightness just aren't quite good enough to warrant a whole-hearted recommendation.

Digital Spy | Luke Johnson

The Lumia 950 is not a bad device on the whole. Its screen is stunning and camera impressive. It's just everything else - the bits that meld the core features together - that are lacking. That and the design.

The display, the camera, the battery life, all of that is just fine with the Lumia 950. Folks who know the app situation and don't mind it, they'll be happy with the hardware here... For everyone else, though – the ones who wanted to actually use Continuum to work, the ones who want Windows 10 Mobile but who also want apps – well, I think you'll find that this is very much an unfinished product.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
