What the critics say (scores are out of 100)
Recombu | Alex Todd It's not perfect, but it's not far off - an ideal choice if you're in the market for an affordable phablet. As phablets go, Microsoft's Lumia 640 XL has quickly won us over. It's an undeniably feature rich handset and despite being a little underpowered, delivers on the performance side too. Read full review |

Australian PC World | Tony Ibrahim Few phablets can compete with the Lumia 640 XL when it comes to value for money. It bundles capable software with competent computing hardware, and then throws in solid cameras with outstanding battery life. Heavy multimedia users will naturally gravitate towards its vibrant personality, in whatever bright colours are available. Read full review |

S21 The benefits of the big screen are attractive, and the phone performs well, and the phone performs well, delivering a lot of power for the price. Read full review |
|
Neowin | Andy Weir There's no other way to put this: the Lumia 640 XL is very, very good indeed. There's still some room for improvement, but the Lumia 640 XL is a device that Microsoft should be proud of. Read full review |

Stuff | Andrew Williams For movies and games that massive display is a huge benefit and although it's not particularly high-res, in most other respects it's a pretty good screen. The camera is better than many at this price too, the overall build quality is decent and there's a big battery inside it. After a couple of years of falling behind Android with its budget phones, the Lumia series is finally reclaiming some of that lost ground and the 640 XL continues that trend. Read full review |

phoneArena | Eric M. Zeman The Lumia 640 XL is, by and large, a great phone. It's attractive, well-made, and performs well for it's price tag. I wish the screen had more pixels and I wish call quality was a bit better, but these aren't deal-breakers. Windows Phone runs perfectly on the 640 XL, and Microsoft's core apps are quite good if you need to pair the 640 XL with your work environment. The camera does a great job, (as is often the case on Lumia handsets.) Read full review |

Tom's Guide | Valentina Palladina The Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is a solid Windows phone with a lovely 5.7-inch display and a good rear camera, but we wish the battery lasted longer.... Anyone who likes Windows Phone and has been dying for a huge canvas with which to use it will like the Lumia 640 XL. Read full review |
|
Wired UK | Dave Oliver The Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is bigger than its predecessor and it comes with a significantly improved camera. It's a shame that the screen resolution has effectively dropped and that there is not a little more power available. It is not as much of a bargain as the 640 was before it. Read full review |

pocketnow | Adam Z. Lein It's disappointing that the battery cover could get bent out of shape so easily though, and it's also disappointing that there is no Qi wireless charging capable battery cover available at this time.... On the other hand, the Lumia 640 XL will be one of the first phones to get the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade. Read full review |
