What the critics say (scores are out of 100)
Pocket-lint | Cam Bunton For the first time in the annual phone war, Huawei has succeeded in creating a genuine alternative to the Samsung Galaxy S9. The P20 is refined, polished and attractive. There are almost too many superlatives to describe this mighty impressive phone. Its main issue is that the P20 Pro is that much better... Read full review |
NotebookCheck | Manuel Masiero The Huawei P20 has one of the best smartphone cameras you can get right now. The Huawei P20 Pro is even (slightly) better, but is 250 Euros more expensive. Read full review |
Gadget Speak | mfereday With a choice of colour schemes, this next smartphone has excellent photographic options. Read full review |
Ubergizmo | Hubert Nguyen The P20 Series is one of the most exciting line of smartphones of 2018, and it is one that everyone should give a good look at. Read full review |
Android Central | Alex Dobie Buy the Huawei P20 or P20 Pro if you want a phone with striking design and cameras which, once tamed, can produce jaw-dropping telephoto and low-light photos. For me personally, the Huawei P20 Pro will be my daily driver for the foreseeable future. Read full review |
Neowin | Rich Woods As I mentioned right from the start, I do enjoy Huawei's flagship devices, particularly the P-series. Ultimately, the P20 is a fantastic device that I can recommend to almost anyone. Read full review |
Android Headlines | Nick Sutrich This is Huawei's best devices yet, no doubt, but ultimately don't check every single box. If you need the best smartphone camera ever, these are your phones, otherwise there are still other phones out there that offer more features for less money. Read full review |
TheEffect.Net | John Reilly Yes, there are a few compromises, but the Huawei P20 is an amazing device that produces some of the best photos we've seen come out of a mobile phone. Read full review |
phoneArena | Victor Hristov So yes, the Huawei P20 and especially the P20 Pro are the best phones that Huawei has made to date, but it's hard to get inspired by a rip-off and the P20 series are in many ways just that. If you don't care about that, the P20 Pro checks most boxes for a good flagship. Read full review |
ZDNet | Matthew Miller The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is a long lasting solid smartphone and the P20 brings all of those experiences in a slightly smaller form factor. However, the Mate 10 Pro has that excellent rear fingerprint sensor and a larger battery so it may be a better choice for the enterprise. In either case, you can pick up an excellent competitor to Samsung. Read full review |
GadgetMatch | Isa Rodriguez Admittedly, there are still improvements that can be made on this device, but it's nothing I can't forgive for what I get: a solid rear camera, capable overall phone that's pretty and with a premium build, and good beauty mode. Read full review |
The Inquirer | Isaac Harris-Holt The P20 is a little lacking when it comes to graphics processing, but the camera is amazing, the sound quality is good and you'll have an incredibly handsome phone to boot... Read full review |
GadgetSpeak | paul_smart If the real top of the range phones are just beyond your budget then the P20 may just be affordable it has a lot to offer. Read full review |
AnandTech | Andrei Frumusanu Overall I think it's going to be a very subjective decision based on what the buyer wants to prioritise, especially when it comes to battery life and camera experience. If you value battery life over everything else, then the P20's are your go-to choice in terms of current flagships. Read full review |
Trusted Reviews | Josh Levenson ...if like most customers, you're after a handset with a fantastic build and high-end performance for a price that won't break the bank, then look no further than the Huawei P20. It certainly won't disappoint. Read full review |
TechRadar | Holly Brockwell The Huawei P20 is not quite the Huawei P10 successor we wanted, and it's not worthy of being called the P20. The follow-up to Huawei's P10 has plenty of high points, not least the camera and hardware, but the Huawei P20 doesn't quite have enough to compete with 2018's best flagships. It seems the much better P20 Pro is doing that instead. Read full review |
T3 | Spencer Hart The Huawei P20 is a beautiful phone, that's for sure. It's a shame that it doesn't have the innovative camera found in the P20 Pro. Oh, and it looks like an iPhone X â that may put off some. Read full review |
Stuff | Robert Leedham The iPhone X blends with Samsung's Galaxy S9 in identikit fashion. A great Android all-rounder that borrows a little bit too much from its rivals. Read full review |
Recombu | Chris Barraclough Huawei's super-smart 2018 flagship phone is a seductive blend of gorgeous hardware and intelligent software, which makes for a very satisfying everyday experience. Read full review |

What Mobile If you're happy with taking the less impressive device in the P20 line, this could be the one for you. But do keep in mind the P20 Pro is one impressive device. Read full review |
Expert Reviews | Nathan Spendelow, Alan Martin Without the promised world-beater of a camera, the P20 is left in a very difficult position. Yes, it looks beautiful and is reasonably snappy but...it's a tough sell compared with the opposition. The battery life is middling, the weatherproofing is limited, there's no room for added storage and the 3.5mm headphone jack is gone. There are just too many compromises to make the P20 seriously worth considering. Read full review |
IT PRO | Bobby Hellard The P series is improving and the P20 is an impressive device, but its still behind the likes of Apple and Samsung and having made the Pro so vastly superior, Huawei leaves us to wonder why you should buy the P20. Read full review |
Alphr | Jonathan Bray The Huawei P20 looked like it might have been a belter at first, especially given the price point, but in fact it turns out to be a big fat turkey. Read full review |
