The Huawei Mate 9 is a large phone, but for those of use who spend hours each day on our phones, a large display is an asset... Compared to the competition the Mate 9 camera is my current favorite and I am thoroughly enjoying all of the advanced capture modes... It is the best priced flagship available today.

While the Galaxy Note 7 and the Mate 9 are different products with different missions and visions, the latter still fills up the former's big shoes as a choice for those willing to spend a little more on a large smartphone. Big, better, beautiful.

The Huawei Mate 9 isn't quite the essential purchase that Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 was (before the whole burny screamy saga), but it is a very good super-sized handset. Pricey but premium smartphone experience.

This is a fantastically well-built phablet with a cracking Camera and some innovative features. Well worth a look when it goes on sale soon.... For me the phone just fits in all the ways a good smartphone should. It has a cracking screen (in a good way), it is a great size without being too bulky and it performs perfectly for my busy life.

Do you want a phone with a big screen? The Mate 9 manages to feel like a phone and not a mini tablet. With fewer premium phablet options to consider this year, Huawei's offering is definitely a phone to consider.

The Huawei Mate 9 is the perfect for smartphone for someone who wants the most screen real estate in the smallest package. The handset isn't the fanciest looking device, but its solid build and use of quality materials make it respectable.

It doesn't have the flame-prone Note 7's beautiful lines and curves, but if you're after a high-performance big-screened phone that won't set your pants on fire, the Mate 9 is a great option.

It's a giant smartphone that doesn't feel like a big smartphone when you pick it up. We love the camera's ability to inspire and the sheer processing power, but perhaps most of all, it's the software alterations that make the Mate 9 the first Huawei phone that's easy to live with everyday, without any modifications.

Fantastic battery life and Huawei's best software to date make for an enticing phablet, but there remains areas where it can do better – and that might hamper its overall appeal... Not only is the Huawei Mate 9 a fantastically well-rounded device, it also seems to be one of the few true phablets actually available. If you're after a big Android phone, this is easily the best choice.

The Huawei Mate 9 is a very large smartphone that does a great job of not feeling so in use. The curved back, minimal body to screen ratio and solid build mean it's easier to hold onto than you might expect.... The Huawei Mate 9 hits a lot of strong notes: it's fast, has tons of storage, and offers a really large screen for the size of the handset. And while we wish that the display was higher-res and a little better balanced, the fact that it's incredibly bright is a big plus. Audio performance isn't overlooked either, and the use of multiple speakers helps the Mate 9 stand its own against its peers.

A big phone, with a big battery. And that's what the Mate 9 is. And it is arguably a more popular line than their P series, which was their original flagship. The Mate 9 is probably going to be one of Huawei's best smartphones for the near future... The only real down-side to the Huawei Mate 9 is pricing and availability.

The Huawei Mate 9 is a polished and powerful phone with great battery life, an innovative camera and - how about that? - a headphone jack... has a great battery that charges crazy fast, and is a little bigger than top competitors. It also has top specs and some nifty details, like four microphones and stereo speakers. It takes amazing black-and-white photos.

It may be the most powerful phone we've seen to date (if you discount 3D performance), but that's a hugely unpleasant pill to swallow. (...) You'll be very happy with Huawei, but you need to really want that extra inch to make the Mate 9 a must-buy.

International Business Times | Owen Hughes

For a phone that brings machine learning, dual-camera tech and revamped software to the table, the Huawei Mate 9 feels somewhat unspectacular. The phone is large without capitalising on what the extra inches can afford, and the lack of a QHD screen is particularly disappointing.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
