This phone ticks all the boxes I needed it to. Good cameras? Check! Great battery life? Yes, sir! Is it good for watching Netflix? You betcha!

The Huawei Mate 20 offers lightning-fast performance and a comprehensive list of features, with a clever bill of compromises to help meet its price tag. It's a genuine OnePlus 6T rival.

The Mate 20 is an awesome phone packing premium performance for a high price.

It's an awesome phone, but no one really notices it because it's overshadowed by a Pro version that's even more awesome.

The Huawei Mate 20 distills much of what makes the Mate 20 Pro an excellent phone into something that's different, though not necessarily inferior. It costs less, offers more screen and has a headphone jack.

The Huawei Mate 20 is a fantastic smartphone, but one which forgoes some of the Mate 20 Pro's premium features. The saving is worth it in our opinion though.

The Mate 20 is a pretty wide phone and offers a very large display for those who want a big phone. It's not very comfortable in my pants pocket though and is a bit bulky to hold in my hand.

Android Headlines | Nick Sutrich

While the Mate 20 Pro represents the most premium design and price tag of the two, the new speaker configuration on the Mate 20 Pro is a bit strange, and lack of stereo speakers on the less-expensive Mate 20 is terribly disappointing.

The regular Mate 20 makes for a much more interesting buy [compared to the Mate 20 Pro], and the one aspect where the phone just outright dominates is battery life. I've really no real substantial negatives about the phone, other than I wished its cameras performed a bit better. Here I think most buyers will be extremely happy with their purchase, and I think Huawei offers an overall good package.

The Huawei Mate 20 is a capable, high performance phone that proves less tech can sometimes mean a better user experience.

I'm not going to beat around the bush: when I like something, I really like it. The Huawei Mate 20 has been an extension of my hand for several weeks now. The only problem I have with the Mate 20 is that it's difficult to handle with one hand.

Summing it all up, the Huawei Mate 20 is a big and powerful Android phone... Is it worth paying the full flagship cost for this one? If you value the incredible battery life, the answer to that is yes, certainly.

The Mate 20 does a lot of what makes the Pro so great - but not enough. Unless you're unlucky enough to live somewhere Huawei has deemed the Mate 20 Pro to be off-limits, this isn't the version to buy.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
