I had very high expectations for the Mate 10 Pro, and I've come away after a month with the firm belief that it is the best phone I've had since, well, the Mate 9.

A near-faultless Android smartphone, albeit at a higher price-point than we've come used to from Huawei.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is another fine handset from the Chinese giants – it looks beautiful, is capable of great shots and has a battery that won't give up on you. But at a premium price, you get the impression the company has set up difficult comparisons with its rivals.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro has a premium design, and is a solid performer in all categories. The battery life is class leading, but we wish Emotion UI looked a little more premium.

I can only say that the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is a fantastic device mired in the deep chasm of political controversy. You'll have to make up your own mind about the political ramifications but I say to you. The phone is fantastic! The camera could use some improvements but overall, it's fantastic.

Premium made in China: small caveats, but a lot that impresses! Overall, Huawei offers an excellent smartphone with the Mate 10 Pro, which also convinces with its extremely smooth operating system and great usability. In addition, the product remains relatively affordable. Wow, but with minor pitfalls.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro offers buyers fantastic hardware and OK software. If you're on the market for a top-end phablet, but don't want to spend the extortionate cost of a Galaxy Note 8 or iPhone X, the Mate 10 Pro is the best option available.

Huawei has a fine phone on its hand in the Mate 10 Pro. It's surely a star in Huawei's lineup, though it could shine just a wee bit brighter were it not for a few small dark spots. I'd recommend the Mate 10 Pro to anyone seeking an unlocked alternative to Samsung, Google or LG. Moreover, if the Note8 or Pixel 2 XL are just too darned big for you, take solace in knowing the Mate 10 Pro is more manageable for most people.

From the week we've been living with our Mate 10 Pro, it's clear that Huawei has finally cracked this category. It's a flagship that the general public can seriously consider buying above and beyond its similar-priced competition. Say hello to your new best new Mate, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

As a flagship smartphone, the Mate 10 is an outstanding proposition. On paper and in practice, it's clearly the best device that Huawei have ever brought to the market...if you're not swayed by Samsung's return to form with the Note 8, Apple's ultra-expensive iPhone X or Google's funky Pixel 2, then rest assured that the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is a pretty solid alternative. A great one even..

Ultimately, we can say that Huawei has done enough to sell the Mate 10 as a strong competitor in the space, but we wouldn't necessarily go as far as to say that it has enough distinction to overpower the majority of the bunch out there. Get it primarily if you're looking for a fabulous camera for still shots and a long battery life.

Some of the Mate 10 Pro's "headline" features still feel like gimmicks: the NPU is under-utilized, and frankly the phone would be better were EMUI left off altogether. However the core of it is admirably solid.

There's an awful lot to love about the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, and, while they might not yet be meeting Samsung head to head, they're another positive step in that direction. If Huawei comes through on all - or even most - of the promises the Mate 10 makes, then they're guaranteed to only get better over time.

I can't deny that Huawei has done a lot right with the Mate 10 Pro's hardware, even if it doesn't necessarily break any new ground. But it also has to make and sell a phone that people will want to buy here - and frankly, the Mate 10 Pro isn't it.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
