Android Authority | Lanh Nguyen

HTC delivers again by bringing us a high end experience without the high end price tag... If you're a fan of HTC products but don't want to spend top dollar on a flagship product, the HTC Desire 820 is certainly worthy of your consideration. Aside from the display, the experience here is more than above average and nearly at 'flagship' level.

The HTC Desire 820 is a logical progression and the successor to the Desire 816. As such, it does its job well: the smartphone comes equipped with an outstanding display, a speedy CPU and usable cameras.

The HTC Desire 820 gives a lot for your money - a powerful octa-core processor, a big 5.5 inch screen and an 8 megapixel front camera. But it's too big to become a mainstream phone.

Digital Versus | Sofian Nouira

All in all, the Desire 820 is a great smartphone. It might be pretty disappointing when it comes to audio-especially for an HTC product-but, in all other respects, it performs admirably for a product in this sector. Although it never exceeds expectations, either, and herein lies the problem. In its price bracket, there's now a great deal of competition from the likes of the brilliant Asus ZenFone 2 and the ever impressive LG G3. Not only that, but the lack of real differences between the Desire 820 and its predecessor, the Desire 816, means you may well opt to save yourself fifty quid and get the older model. The 820 might be more responsive, but the 816 has a better music player...

HTC are slowly making the mid-range area their own. Perched slightly on the top end of the mid-range tier, the phones, although plastic have a very strong design sensibility and have some really good features. However, with the Desire 820, the battery should have been better and given the price, it should ideally already have been on Android 5.0 and not running KitKat.

Gadgets Now | Anupam Saxena

HTC Desire 820 is a not a bad smartphone to buy but the mid-range landscape has changed quite a bit and there are other good options available in the market ... if you want a better big-screen smartphone, the OnePlus One is a much better option.

Pocket-lint | Chris Hall

There's plenty of power for daily tasks, a large screen to consume content and cameras that can offer some great shots, even if the high megapixel count doesn't immediately translate into the best results. However, as much as we like the design and build, this handset sits squarely in the mid-range and the hardware experience confirms that, especially when it comes to the screen quality.

Wired UK | Dave Oliver

The HTC Desire 820 is a big, but mostly capable handset, with a splendid screen, great accompanying speakers, plus a decent -- if unspectacular processor. For the price, the 820's cameras also boast a good neumber of megapixels. However, for a similar price you could get yourself superior screens plus higher specs and more premium builds.

In almost every way, HTC has improved upon the Desire 816, and created a phone with a more attractive design, stellar camera performance, and more power for handling all kinds of tasks. But all these perks come at a cost - the battery life. If you are planning on buying the Desire 820, we'd suggest purchasing a battery pack along with it.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
