Trusted Reviews | Peter Phelps

The Honor 9X is a solid all-rounder that will satisfy most people's needs. The high-resolution camera produces good images, performance is strong, and the battery life exceptional. But until the Android ban is resolved, Trusted Reviews can't recommend the device.

The Honor 9X is a phone that's filled with positives. Most impressively, It looks like something far more expensive than what it actually costs, and manages to hold this veneer up to close scrutiny.

TechRadar | Tom Bedford

The Honor 9X is a fine phone for its price range, and while it won't blow you away with its performance, cameras or display, it still works perfectly well as your day-to-day smartphone.

Pocket-lint | Mike Lowe

Overall, the Honor 9X is a capable handset, its notch-free design being its big sell. Whether it'll actually sell is another matter, though, with Huawei's ongoing trade issues and the question over future support for a phone such as this.

Android Authority | Robert Triggs

The Honor 9X's focus on flamboyant style attempts to hide its so-so internal hardware. While definitely an upgrade from the 8X, there are more competitive choices out there.

The thing to love most is, of course, the screen, but the excellent battery performance can't be forgotten. Coupled together, you've got an awesome device for media consumption and gaming, with plenty of storage even before you look at adding a memory card.

At the price, the Honor 9X brings a decent mix of cameras, design and performance to the table to woo buyers in the segment.

What Mobile | Saf Malik

Overall the Honor 9X is a valuable addition to the budget market and can hold its own against some of the higher-priced models on the market. The excellent battery life and the great display make up for a pretty poor camera, particularly for a Huawei device.

... if you are not a heavy gamer and consume a lot of content in the form of YouTube videos, streaming TV shows, movies and want a good viewing experience, the Honor 9X will suffice for your needs. Not to forget, the rear camera performs well, and the battery gets you through a full day.

The Indian Express | Hansa Verma

Overall, Honor 9X does look like a decent smartphone in the price range, but it is difficult to recommend, especially given the older processor, lack of fast charging, and a design that didn't quite stand out for me.

The Honor 9X has a good day-long battery life and decent cameras for those looking for a simple camera phone.

NDTV Gadgets | Nadeem Sarwar

The Honor 9X is a good enough phone and will appeal to those who value style, but it lacks what it takes to decisively edge out its rivals, and even some models priced a bit lower. The likes of the Redmi Note 8, Realme 5 Pro, Vivo U20, and Nokia 7.2 are better all-rounders and offer more value for money.

A gorgeous design and well-made hardware let down a little by some performance critiques and the irritating omission of NFC.

The Honor 9X is a good mid-range smartphone, but there are few surprises. This applies to many current smartphones, but here you have to bear in mind: you are actually holding a Huawei P Smart Z with a polished camera in your hand

The Honor 9X is certainly among the good-looking devices launched recently. It also offers a pleasant viewing experience and to offers reasonable performance in day-to-day use.

This fashionista phone is dressed to impress, but what's underneath can't keep up the pace with similarly-priced rivals

So, should you buy it? Honestly, I don't think you should. If you've got an Honor 8X definitely not, and if you've got an Honor 7X and are still fine with the performance, I'd keep that a bit longer too. The Honor 9X doesn't feel like enough of an upgrade in enough areas to recommend it.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
