What the critics say (scores are out of 100)

Stuff | Andrew Williams

Cutting-edge design at a price that won't shred your wallet. Even with its average gaming performance, this is an excellent budget phone.

Android Central | Richard Devine

Finally, a budget Honor phone that just about ticks every box. This is arguably the budget phone to get right now.

The Honor 9 Lite does well with its bright display, fast LTE and four cameras. Gamers, on the other hand, will not always be as pleased with it.

Android Authority | Abhishek Baxi

The Honor 9 Lite could be a stunning all-rounder, but while it checks all the boxes, it does not dazzle.

The Mobile Indian | Rohan Pal

Honor 9 Lite is surely one of the most beautiful-looking smartphones at this price range that offers some delightful viewing experience. The performance is satisfactory and the camera does a decent job in ample lights.

Well, if you want a decent performing smartphone that still turns heads on a relatively tight budget, the answer is yes. And it is yes again if you want a good cameraphone without spending too much

While a step-down from the original Honor 9, this Lite version is well worth considering with its pleasant, stylish appearance and more than adequate performance.

The Economic Times | Hitesh Raj Bhagat

We think the 3/32GB variant of the Honor 9 Lite is in a real sweet spot with that price. If nothing else, it can win you over with sheer design and value.

So to round it all up the Honor 9 Lite is a great choice with a great screen, battery life and performance.

Honor 9 Lite is an absolute steal, given that in this price bracket, no other option gives you an 18:9 display (a very capable one at that) and quad cameras. Also, the 9 Lite is the best-looking smartphone in the budget segment in my opinion, and the device should turn heads every time you take it out of your pocket.

Pocket-lint | Cam Bunton

In many ways the Honor 9 Lite sets a new standard for sub-£200 phones. Its striking looks are well beyond its asking price, delivering a degree of flagship quality. However, there are quirks that hold it back from perfection, while the headline quad camera feature isn't as exciting as it sounds.

Expert Reviews | Nathan Spendelow

With high-end features and a dirt-cheap price tag, the Honor 9 Lite is one of the most tempting budget smartphones out there.

TechRadar | Sudhanshu Singh, John McCann

The Honor 9 Lite has the looks of an expensive phone and it's feature-packed, but it's the battery and rear camera that leaves us asking for more.

Mr Phone | Ershad Kaleebullah

if we have to compare the Honor 9 Lite directly with the Xiaomi Mi A1, the latter is a marginally better pick for providing a stock Android experience and better rear cameras. However, the Mi A1 doesn't come with a futuristic bezel-less display or a great selfie camera. Therefore, the ball is in your court.

Trusted Reviews | Jon Mundy

The Honor 9 Lite's bezel-light design and twin-lens camera tricks are eye catching, but it's perhaps too quirky to fully take on the Motorola G-series at the top of the table.

NDTV Gadgets | Roydon Cerejo

The base variant of the Honor 9 Lite is one of the better options currently in the market. The 4GB RAM version that we reviewed feels a bit too expensive considering it's not an all-rounder. If you're in no hurry then you might want to wait a bit for Xiaomi's new Redmi 5 Plus.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
