For only a little more, you can buy the Honor 9...But both are fantastic phones that offer unbelievable value for money and at this price deservedly worthy of an Expert Reviews Best Buy award.

The Honor 7X is the first mid-range device to bring an 18:9 ratio display to the market, and that's impressive considering the price point.

This screen-filling smartphone doesn't cost a fortune, and although it's got a few niggling issues, it's hard to complain too much given the price.

In short, Huawei/Honor hit where it counts: display, battery, industrial design.

There are really only two major complaints that we have about this phone, which is the speaker quality and the fact that it charges over a micro USB port. Otherwise, it's a fantastic smartphone from Honor.

The Honor 7X is one of those phones that annoys me because it is so close to being amazingly great for most people, and the title like I said, the 7X is nearly perfect.

This means that the 7x is standing in a class of its own right now - at least till someone else comes along to disrupt the party in 2018.

If you are looking for a premium-looking, dual camera device with an 18:9 aspect ratio display and are on a tight budget, this might be as good as it gets. Or should that be, as 'Honor'-able as it gets?

All budget phones are going to come with some compromises, and the Honor 7X has its fair share. But I do think this is one of the best budget phones on the market right now, and it has more plusses than it does minuses in the overall big picture.

It's hard to believe just how much phone you can get these days for only $200. You'll still have to make some compromises, but it is showing that it's finally taking software updates seriously.

Honor 7X is a jack of all trades not a perfectionist. It's arguably the best balance of design, performance and features in its class, even if its rivals do certain things a little better.

The 7X brings some much needed variety..which has so far been dominated by the likes of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (review), Moto G5s Plus (review) and even the recently announced Xiaomi Mi A1 (review). Which handset you ultimately choose as your daily driver depends on the features you value, but that said, the Honor 7X should prove to be a worthy choice.

The Huawei-made Honor 7x is a perfect example of the China-base brand's utter lack of fear for competition in the global budget phone market. This is a lower-end-of-highest-tier smartphone masquerading as a budget phone. If it weren't for the pricetag I'd swear it was aiming to do battle with Apple's iPhone 8.

There are a lot of positive reviews of the Honor 7X, which makes my impression more of an outlier. All I can note is that many reviewers had the beefier 64GB version of the 7X that also has 4GB of RAM, which isn't available in the U.S.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM only deals are limited to 30-day and 12-month plans, excluding shorter plans and Pay As You Go rates.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
