ZDNet | Matthew Miller

We may see another flagship priced twice as much as the Pixel 4a 5G, but I'm a fan of this strategy of providing a solid stock Android phone with all the great camera and Google goodies that set the Pixel line apart from the rest.

It's top marks for the Pixel 4a 5G...Google has somehow stumbled on the secret ingredient when it comes to offering high-level features at the fraction of the cost of pricey flagships.

There are smartphones that offer better hardware for similar money, but they simply can't match the Pixel on camera or battery life.

If you're all about saving money - and these days, let's face it: who isn't - the Pixel 4a with 5G makes a solid set of compromises, building what is in essence a Pixel 5, but without the Pixel 5 price tag. And bizarrely, the Pixel 5 is a pretty solid value overall, but the Pixel 4a with 5G feels like it has nailed it even more.

Pixel 4a is an excellent value, but its 5G-enabled big brother offers a significant upgrade for not too much more cash.

The Pixel 4a 5G takes the best of the Pixel 5 and combines it with the value package of the Pixel 4a.

If you want a new Pixel with a bigger screen, wide-angle camera, 5G and a headphone jack, the Pixel 4a 5G is the phone for you.

Pixel 4a 5G does everything it needs to do to be great, and doesn't do a bit more. For most people, that's all you need.

If you do not need 5G, then the 5.8-inch Pixel 4a is a good alternative to the Pixel 4a 5G:

The Pixel 4a 5G may not be as good a value as the Pixel 4a, but it has many of the features of the Pixel 5 for hundreds less. That makes it a better option if you want a 5G phone from Google.

In short, while Google's tweener phone is good, I'm not sure the Pixel 4a 5G does enough to stand out from the great phones that sandwich it.

The Pixel 4a 5G is a good phone perched in an awkward place in Google's 2020 smartphone lineup.

It's priced a bit awkwardly between Google's best and cheapest phones, but it's still an excellent option.

For those looking for an even more affordable device there's also the Pixel 4a, but when it comes to bang for your buck we'd take the Pixel 4a 5G.

As with all Pixels, the 4A 5G's strengths are hard to put on a spec sheet. It's more unassuming than other Android phones, but its software is also more elegant and easier to use - and of course, the camera is almost surely better than the direct competition. It won't turn heads, but the Pixel 4A 5G won't let you down, either.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
