The Apple iPhone 11 Pro: In more detail

The iPhone 11 Pro is the successor to the iPhone XS, and smaller sibling to the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Its headline feature is its new triple camera, which has an ultra-wide lens in addition to the standard wide angle and telephoto lenses. Reviewers generally agreed that this is one of the best - if not the best - cameras available on any smartphone. It also has a brighter display, better battery life, a new, more powerful processor and a new version of iOS. At around £300 more than the iPhone 11, you’ll pay for its premium camera and screen - but the iPhone 11 Pro offers high-powered specs in a compact design.

Camera

The camera is the iPhone 11 Pro’s standout feature, and one of the advantages it has over the iPhone 11. It has a triple lens setup, with an ultra-wide camera joining the standard and telephoto lenses for the first time on an iPhone.

In addition to the hardware upgrade it has an improved night mode, which TechRadar said is ‘like turning on the lights in the middle of the night’. It also has an improved portrait mode and the latest Smart HDR, which ensures different elements in a photo are exposed correctly and evenly, and improves dynamic range.

Trusted Reviews found the camera consistently delivered ‘excellent images’ for everyday shots, with great detail and vibrant and well-saturated colours. The Guardian said the camera was ‘a big step up, levelling to or exceeding rivals from the first half of 2019’. TechRadar thought the triple camera setup offered ‘incredible versatility’, while Engadget called it ‘easily the best all-round camera’ that Apple has ever put on a smartphone.

Design

The iPhone 11 Pro looks almost identical to its predecessor, the iPhone XS, and the iPhone X before that, with the same metal and glass body and notch cutout on the screen. It’s smaller than both the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro Max, making it easy to use with one hand.

It features a new frosted matte finish on the rear, which is good for hiding fingerprint smudges. Apple also claims it will make it less slippery to hold, which some reviewers agree with, although The Verge thought it seemed a bit more slippery.

Another difference is the large, square camera bump on the back, which houses the new triple-lens camera setup. The phone is available in a new colour, midnight green, which is a greyish, military green, alongside grey, gold and silver.

Display

Like the iPhone XS, the iPhone 11 Pro has a 5.8-inch display (compared to the Pro Max’s 6.5-inch display). This time around it’s been upgraded to be brighter. Its brightness is boosted even more when watching HDR video content: TechRadar found that watching a movie on iTunes ‘revealed new detail while maintaining deep black colours in scenes’.

The screen is another way the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max differ from their cheaper counterpart, the iPhone 11. The Pro models have an OLED display rather than LCD, meaning they’re significantly sharper, more vibrant and more capable of high contrast.

Trusted Reviews thought the screen was ‘fantastic, sharp and colourful’ and ‘easily one of the nicest to look at out of any 2019 phone’. The Guardian called it ‘a gorgeous display. Sharp, bright, colour-rich and full of contrast’. Engadget thought it was ‘beautiful’ but not noticeably better than the iPhone XS.

Performance

The iPhone 11 Pro is powered by the new A13 Bionic chip, Apple’s most powerful processor ever - making this a very fast phone. This is paired with 4GB of RAM and either 64GB, 128GB or 256GB of storage.

TechRadar said the iPhone 11 Pro offers ‘performance you won’t find on Android phones’, and found in their testing that it was the fastest phone around (along with its larger sibling, the iPhone 11 Pro Max). The Verge found it ‘benchmarks far above the competition’ and The Guardian thought it would ‘handle everything you need now, and will likely be a top performer for years to come’.

Battery life

Apple claims the iPhone 11 Pro’s battery should last four hours longer than its predecessor, the iPhone XS.

Trusted Reviews thought this was a ‘generally accurate way of describing the increase’ and found it could last a whole day. The Guardian found it lasted 32 hours, which was eight hours longer than the XS in their tests. TechRadar found it consistently lasted more than a day - often almost a day and a half - even with heavy use. However, reviewers generally agreed that both the iPhone 11 and the Pro Max model had better battery life.

It has fast charging capability, and for the first time Apple has included a fast charger in the box. This should get your battery to 50% in around half an hour.

The Apple iPhone 11 Pro is nearly perfect and while some may put the high price down as a con in reviews when you use a tool for many hours a day it is pretty easy to justify the price to get work done without any compromises.

If you have your sensible head on, considering you get nearly all the kit for as much as half the price, you should clearly go for the standard 11. If you simply must have a Pro, because, well, it's a Pro, then go for the normal Pro and avoid the Max, you'll save both your pocket and wallet some extra pounds.

These are some of the most well-balanced, most capable phones Apple - or anyone - has ever made. [The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max] are both excellent devices, and represent Apple at the peak of its smartphone game. But are they dramatically better than the premium phones the company gave us last year? Well, yes and no. There are plenty of additions and improvements here, but when it comes to day-to-day use, their impact on the overall iPhone experience can seem muted.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
