Should you buy the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge?

If you're looking for a high-end Android phone, then the S7 and S7 edge should be at the top of your list. With its top-of-the-range specs, refined design, improved camera and the re-introduction of features like water resistance and a memory card slot, it's hard to come up with reasons not to recommend this. Its main competitors are its stablemate, the Galaxy S7, and LG's upcoming G5.

Design

The Galaxy S7 edge keeps the same design language as the last generation of Samsung flagship phones, with the focus on refinement rather than a total upheaval. But the S7 edge has received a more substantial update compared to the conventional S7. The back of the device has a slight curve, and in spite of having a reasonably large 5.5 inch screen, the S7 edge manages to feel smaller than you would expect, making it notably more comfortable to hold. The flatter fingerprint scanner and less distinct camera bump make for a more pleasing device both aesthetically and ergonomically. The S7 edge is IP68-certified, which means that it is dust and water-resistant in up to 1.5m of water for 30 minutes.

Screen

The Galaxy S7 edge retains the same screen resolution as its predecessor, but has a larger 5.5 inch screen size compared to the 5.1 inches of the standard S7. The Super AMOLED display has a screen resolution of 2560x1440 (Quad HD), allowing for sharp image quality and definition.

Of course, the curved edge display allows for some unique features, and Samsung is expanding on the functionality introduced in their previous edged phones. The edge accommodates up to 9 panels, giving you quick access to various functions. You can access them by swiping from the edge towards the center of the screen. "People Edge" lets you add your favorite contacts to the edge display, and "Apps Edge" provides shortcuts to frequently used apps. "Tasks Edge" allows you to program shortcuts to very specific commands. For example, you could make a task shortcut to launch the email app and email a specific person. Finally, Samsung has expanded the size of the slide-out panel so you can see more information at a glance.

The other innovation - common to both the S7 and S7 edge - is an always-on display, so you can always see a clock with notifications, a calendar or image on the screen, even when you're not using the phone. Naturally, you may be concerned about whether this affects battery life - Samsung claims that this feature only uses 0.5% of the battery per hour, and if the proximity sensor is covered (e.g. if the phone is in a bag or pocket), the display will switch off, ensuring minimal impact on how long the battery lasts.

Camera

The 12 megapixel camera on the S7 edge is designed to perform better than its predecessors especially when capturing low-light images. The camera lens aperture has increased to f/1.7,and the pixel size on the sensors has also increased, both of which allow for more light to be captured. The camera has a new autofocusing method (referred to as a 'Dual Pixel' sensor, used by some DSLR cameras), that will allow for significantly faster autofocusing.

Battery and Power

The capacity of the S7 edge's non-removable battery is a hefty 3,600mAh, which should provide a significant improvement in battery life. The Galaxy S7 edge retains Samsung's fast-charging and fast wireless charging features.

Storage

One of the biggest complaints with last year's S6 models was the lack of a memory card slot - the storage you had on the device couldn't be expanded. For the S7 range, Samsung has included support for microSD cards to augment the 32GB internal storage, which means you won't have to worry about running out of space for photos and videos.

Processing Power

Unsurprisingly, Samsung have opted for top-of the range processors for their flagship phone. Depending on which country you buy the S7 edge from, it will either contain a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, or Samsung's own 8890 octa-core processor. Both provide plenty of power to handle the most strenuous computational tasks. All variants come with 4GB RAM, ensuring smooth performance.

For me, I still think the S7 is the better buy. While there's no denying the S7 Edge is a great smartphone, the normal S7 is a more convenient size, it's just as powerful and its battery life is still pretty incredible.

Just like its stablemate, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is simply superb. The best recommendation I can think of, however, is that this is the smartphone I would buy if money was no object; I can think of no stronger endorsement than that.

The Galaxy S7 Edge takes everything we loved about the S6 Edge and infuses it with several coats of polish, creating what is one of the most gorgeous and powerful phones we've ever seen... Bottom-line, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge might not drastically change the formula started by its predecessor, but it certainly does perfect it.

The Galaxy S7 Edge is absolutely the best phone Samsung has ever made, bar none. Sure there are some issues, but most of these are software ones that'll likely get addressed in some form or another over the next few updates. The only hardware problems per say are the ultra slippery build, which is difficult to get around without a case, and that speaker on the bottom where waterproofing seriously degrades the quality from what it could be.

For all those who fell in love with the S6 Edge, you will undoubtedly fall for the S7 Edge's curved appeal once more. That said, it's not an essential upgrade - there's no monumental leap here. The edgy flagship is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. But with its dazzling display, unique curved design, and enduring battery life, it is our hope that the Samsung Galaxy Edge S7 wins over a whole new set of fans.

A rather nice phone that has the ability to fast charge via wireless, I did not try this, sticking to the perhaps safer micro USB connection. The word 'Edge' is taken literally here as the screen has no border at all, so the screen literally goes to the edge.

With the Galaxy S7 Edge, Samsung's side screen is finally ready for primetime... It's more comfortable to hold, adds more screen real estate without adding any bulk, improves the camera, and reincorporates gems like water resistance and a MicroSD card slot... It's a gorgeous phone with tons of power and lots of special features to make it stand out.

Overall, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are solid phones, and overall are quite good. However looking at the broader path this phone has taken Samsung on, I'm left with the feeling that Samsung is just trying to follow industry trends rather than really approaching the design of their devices with some focus in mind.

The Telegraph | Rhiannon Williams

The Galaxy S7 Edge is a beautiful, functional phone which addresses virtually all of the shortcomings of its predecessors. However, you can't please everyone, and there will be those who are annoyed at Samsung for not taking more risks with the design and for relying so heavily on the blueprints of the S6, although the same criticism could fairly be levelled at Apple.

As long as you can handle its somewhat slippery and uncomfortable form, the S7 Edge is a very good Android phone. If you want a current-generation Galaxy phablet, a big Android phone with a superlative camera or just want something flashy to show off then there's really no choice but the S7 Edge.

There's an irony about the S7 Edge in that it is probably more popular than its flatter sibling, yet is much harder to find a good case or screen protector for it. The curved glass already makes it more delicate.... Fast Charging and wireless charging help lessen the impact of the battery drain, which is nice when dealing with a 3600mAh non-removable battery inside.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
