The Moto G is the first phone released by Motorola Mobility in the UK since Google acquired it, and immedialtely caused a stir due to its unique combination of decent hardware, near 'pure' Android user experience, and extremely low price, costing a fraction of high-end phones such as the HTC One or the Samsung Galaxy S4. In May 2014, Motorola announced and released a newer version of the Moto G which also includes a memory card slot and 4G.

It's a good smartphone with an outrageously low price and is the perfect combination to deliver Android to billions of people worldwide.

The Motorola Moto E (2015) is a fantastic budget smartphone. It may not have the best camera in the world and the Moto apps could be easier to set up, but with 4G support, a fantastic battery life and Android 5.0.

Motorola astounds us with a smartphone that's such good value it's not at all clear how the company can be making money from it. If you're not going to splash the cash on a top end iPhone, phablet or camera phone, this is the only handset on any platform worth considering.

While we hoped it would continue the great work started by the G2, we weren't expecting it to prove quite so much of a leap forward. Most phone upgrades these days are incremental, after all, but the G3 is manifestly better than its predecessor.

For the price, the Moto G is a fantastic device. It has a beautiful display with bright, vibrant and detailed images, the sound quality is great and the battery capacity will give you a good 14 hours' use in our experience.

That's where the Motorola's new offering comes in - as long as mobile gaming isn't your focus, the Moto G is arguably an even better bargain - and a brilliant, inexpensive way to sample what Android is all about.

As much as we complain about the Moto G series treading water, that this is still a great buy is what matters most. There's little progress but the Moto G5 is still a budget star.

Thus the Moto G creates quite an awesome entry in the Android history books, right out the gate. Motorola leads the way with a device that's far better than the sum of its price tag.

The Moto G is the bargain of the year. It refuses to look, act or feel like a cheap phone, and out-performs more expensive phones. The only letdown is its small amount of internal memory, and basic camera.

The value proposition for the Moto G is incredible. It's not the most powerful device on the market, but it's well-made, reliable and devoid of all the awful bloatware and sub-part components that usually plague low-end smartphones.

Motorola has potentially changed the entry-level smartphone game with the Moto G. This is a well-built handset with a good screen and a capable processor, and it has a no-frills approach to Android along with some nice shells. This budget phone has "winner" written all over it, and is a deserving recipient of our Best Buy award.

This all adds up to mean that the Moto G outperforms phones presently retailing for twice its price. For this reason in our mind the Moto G is the ideal choice for any business looking for a mass rollout Android handset, despite a few limitations such as limited internal storage and the lack of 4G support.

The Moto G is the best value phone around by miles. It has a great screen, plenty of power, a good battery, colourful, interchangeable cases and a good battery - all of which would normally demand a considerably higher price. Make no mistake: there is nothing else at this price that even comes close.

The Moto G proves that just because a phone is in the lower-tier doesn't automatically make it bad. Oftentimes the low-end segment triggers negative connotations, and companies should be culpable for that reputation. Plenty of focus is set upon the flagship future-admittedly, that's the beauty of technology-but very little attention is spent catering to the rest. Motorola has proven a beautiful, fast and well-made device can exist on the bottom rungs without making too many sacrifices; the bar has certainly been raised

It's the all-round bundle that is great everywhere. As a phone it's great, its internals, CPU, RAM all are good. In use it feels snappy mostly. You could swap a flagship worth several times its price for this and not want to kill yourself. It's a genuinely good device, not just good for the money but just plain good.

Make no mistake: this is a very good phone. And Samsung did nearly all the important things well. With a great screen, great battery life, and a good camera, the S5 leaves me with few reasons not to recommend it - and the waterproof body is a fantastic bonus. But I don't love anything about this device. It's not beautiful like the One, not polished like the iPhone, not full of cool new software like the Moto X. The S5 is a very good phone, but it leaves me wanting more.

The Motorola Moto G is by no means a perfect device, but it's hard to beat for the price tag with no contract commitment.... The G has a comfortable, somewhat-customizable body that fits well in the hand and in your pocket.. Call quality was rather good and battery life bordered on excellent.... The exceptionally poor camera application and photo gallery tools are frustrating, but can be sidestepped with alternatives from the Play Store.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
