Release Date (UK): December 2013 |
The Moto G is the first phone released by Motorola Mobility in the UK since Google acquired it, and immedialtely caused a stir due to its unique combination of decent hardware, near 'pure' Android user experience, and extremely low price, costing a fraction of high-end phones such as the HTC One or the Samsung Galaxy S4. In May 2014, Motorola announced and released a newer version of the Moto G which also includes a memory card slot and 4G.
What the critics say (scores are out of 100)
AndroidPit | Loie Favre It's a good smartphone with an outrageously low price and is the perfect combination to deliver Android to billions of people worldwide. Read full review |
Expert Reviews | Christopher Minasians The Motorola Moto E (2015) is a fantastic budget smartphone. It may not have the best camera in the world and the Moto apps could be easier to set up, but with 4G support, a fantastic battery life and Android 5.0. Read full review |

The Gadget Show Motorola astounds us with a smartphone that's such good value it's not at all clear how the company can be making money from it. If you're not going to splash the cash on a top end iPhone, phablet or camera phone, this is the only handset on any platform worth considering. Read full review |
Stuff | Tein Hee Seow While we hoped it would continue the great work started by the G2, we weren't expecting it to prove quite so much of a leap forward. Most phone upgrades these days are incremental, after all, but the G3 is manifestly better than its predecessor. Read full review |
V3 | Alastair Stevenson ... the Moto G is the ideal choice for any business looking for a mass rollout Android handset, despite a few limitations such as low storage and no 4G support. Read full review |
Pocket-lint | Britta O'Boyle For the price, the Moto G is a fantastic device. It has a beautiful display with bright, vibrant and detailed images, the sound quality is great and the battery capacity will give you a good 14 hours' use in our experience. Read full review |
Eurogamer | Damien McFerran That's where the Motorola's new offering comes in - as long as mobile gaming isn't your focus, the Moto G is arguably an even better bargain - and a brilliant, inexpensive way to sample what Android is all about. Read full review |
Trusted Reviews | Max Parker As much as we complain about the Moto G series treading water, that this is still a great buy is what matters most. There's little progress but the Moto G5 is still a budget star. Read full review |
TechRadar | John McCann A stunning phone for very little money - poorer camera aside, it's the perfect PAYG phone. You won't get a better budget blower than the Moto G. Read full review |
SlashGear | Chris Burns Thus the Moto G creates quite an awesome entry in the Android history books, right out the gate. Motorola leads the way with a device that's far better than the sum of its price tag. Read full review |
Digital Trends | Andy Boxall The Moto G is the bargain of the year. It refuses to look, act or feel like a cheap phone, and out-performs more expensive phones. The only letdown is its small amount of internal memory, and basic camera. Read full review |
The Next Web | Nick Summers The value proposition for the Moto G is incredible. It's not the most powerful device on the market, but it's well-made, reliable and devoid of all the awful bloatware and sub-part components that usually plague low-end smartphones. Read full review |
ITProPortal | Sandra Vogel Motorola has potentially changed the entry-level smartphone game with the Moto G. This is a well-built handset with a good screen and a capable processor, and it has a no-frills approach to Android along with some nice shells. This budget phone has "winner" written all over it, and is a deserving recipient of our Best Buy award. Read full review |
Forbes | Gordon Kelly The Nokia Lumia 930 is the best Windows Phone handset to date . It is beautifully designed with standout colour options, well made and has specifications up with many of the best Android phones. Read full review |
The Inquirer | Alastair Stevenson This all adds up to mean that the Moto G outperforms phones presently retailing for twice its price. For this reason in our mind the Moto G is the ideal choice for any business looking for a mass rollout Android handset, despite a few limitations such as limited internal storage and the lack of 4G support. PC Advisor | Chris Martin Motorola's Moto G is the best budget smartphone around... It's only limited in the storage department and a lack of 4G support. Read full review |
Mobile Choice The Motorola Moto G offers incredible value for money, with an HD screen and quad core performance that its peers can only dream of. Read full review |
CNET UK | Andrew Hoyle The Moto G is the best value phone around by miles. It has a great screen, plenty of power, a good battery, colourful, interchangeable cases and a good battery - all of which would normally demand a considerably higher price. Make no mistake: there is nothing else at this price that even comes close. Read full review |
Australian PC World | Tony Ibrahim Motorola has managed to deliver one of the best value-for-money smartphones on the market today. It is wonderfully styled, has powerful innards and offers the money-saving advantages of a dual-SIM smartphone. Read full review |
TechnoBuffalo | Brandon Russell The Moto G proves that just because a phone is in the lower-tier doesn't automatically make it bad. Oftentimes the low-end segment triggers negative connotations, and companies should be culpable for that reputation. Plenty of focus is set upon the flagship future-admittedly, that's the beauty of technology-but very little attention is spent catering to the rest. Motorola has proven a beautiful, fast and well-made device can exist on the bottom rungs without making too many sacrifices; the bar has certainly been raised Read full review |
NotebookCheck | Daniel Schuster Google led the way with its Nexus 4, and to-date with the Nexus 5. It now applies this strategy to the bought out manufacturer Motorola - high-performance hardware alongside appealing looks, and a good build at an affordable price. Read full review |
PC Pro | Jonathan Bray We've no hesitation in recommending it for those on a tight budget - it's our new favourite low-cost handset. Read full review |
MobileTechTalk | Mark Ramos It's the all-round bundle that is great everywhere. As a phone it's great, its internals, CPU, RAM all are good. In use it feels snappy mostly. You could swap a flagship worth several times its price for this and not want to kill yourself. It's a genuinely good device, not just good for the money but just plain good. Read full review |
TechSpot | Tim Schiesser No device is ever perfect though but at this price point you can't expect everything to be top-notch. Where it counts, the Moto G delivers, making it one of the best budget Android smartphones on the market today. Read full review |
Recombu | Editorial Team the Motorola Moto G offers incredible value for money. This is easily the best sub-£150 smartphone you can buy right now, and we're hoping that other budget phone manufacturers sit up and take notice. Read full review |

Android Authority | Josua Vergara We strongly recommend the Moto G to anyone looking for an affordable smartphone, but also to anyone who wants a phone that just works great out of the box. Read full review |
Brighthand | Jeff Dunn Excellent screen, impossible value at this price point. The Moto G is the kind of phone people need to buy and support if they really want to boost the collective quality of low-end smartphones. Read full review |
Mobile Syrup | Daniel Bader Whereas the Moto E has some glaring pricing issues, there is no mistaking the incredible value of the Moto G LTE. The more I use the Moto G, the better I realize its triumph. Read full review |

The Boxed (UK) | Editorial Team We love the Motorola Moto G, and if you are in the market for an Android but have no need for a flashy flagship device, so will you. Especially if you're looking to save a buck while you're at it. Read full review |

Digital Spy | Hunter Skipworth It's simple, well thought out and great for smartphone beginners. If you haven't thought about owning a smartphone before, or find the concept intimidating, the Moto G will make things simple where it matters. Read full review |
NDTV Gadgets | Ketan Pratap At this price point, no other phones offer an experience that is as good, so in that sense the Moto G is a game changer. Read full review |
MSN Tech | Dan Sung It's hard not to like this phone but with a very average look and feel, and little in the way of big screen movie fun, it's also hard to love it. Read full review |

Engadget | Jamie Rigg The Moto G is quite simply the best phone on the market in its price range. Read full review |

The Verge | David Pierce Make no mistake: this is a very good phone. And Samsung did nearly all the important things well. With a great screen, great battery life, and a good camera, the S5 leaves me with few reasons not to recommend it - and the waterproof body is a fantastic bonus. But I don't love anything about this device. It's not beautiful like the One, not polished like the iPhone, not full of cool new software like the Moto X. The S5 is a very good phone, but it leaves me wanting more. Read full review |

Phone Scoop | Eric M. Zeman The Motorola Moto G is by no means a perfect device, but it's hard to beat for the price tag with no contract commitment.... The G has a comfortable, somewhat-customizable body that fits well in the hand and in your pocket.. Call quality was rather good and battery life bordered on excellent.... The exceptionally poor camera application and photo gallery tools are frustrating, but can be sidestepped with alternatives from the Play Store. Read full review |
