What Hi-Fi?

The camera might not be as good as was promised, BlinkFeed won't be for everyone and the Zoe photos could become a little used gimmick, but the overall package is an excellent one that's pretty hard to find any serious fault in. HTC has managed to create a well-designed, well thought-out phone both inside and out, which is sure to give its competition plenty of food for thought.

The HTC One is the best phone that HTC has made. The design, the refreshes made to HTC Sense, and the power on offer make this among the best that Android has on offer. There's innovation, there's attention to detail and there's plenty on offer straight out of the box.

The HTC One is currently the best smartphone on the market. It's not perfect, and nor is the Android app ecosystem, but the combination of stunning design, prodigiously fast hardware, superbly-implemented software and keen focus on what's important to the average customer makes it the best choice for most consumers.

It is a brilliant device in virtually every aspect. Coming with a beautiful aluminum body that fits almost organically in the hand, it has a great and vivid, extremely sharp 4.7-inch screen. The stereo front speaker bring a small revolution in smartphone sound that you'll appreciate instantly when you hear it.

The HTC One might be the most desirable phone available right now. Its metal-backed body feels fantastic in the hand, its screen is superb, performance is great and Sense 5 offers some interesting new features that you can choose to side-step if you prefer old-style Sense. The UltraPixel camera is a mite disappointing given the ballyhoo made at its launch, but it proves that HTC is one of just a few mobile companies trying something truly interesting.

The HTC One is one of the best designed phones we've ever used, has an outstanding display and its battery life is slightly improved over previous models. However, the One's new camera technology isn't a revolution and the tile-based 'BlinkFeed' home screen won't suit all users.

It's handsome, well-made and well thought through. Plus, the full metal jacket gives the phone a premium feel. It certainly has a hard battle ahead to squeak in between the inevitable sales of Samsung's and Apple's crowd-pleasers, but if there's any justice, it will.

HTC has a lot riding on the success of the One, and has pulled out all the stops to produce a top-tier handset capable of challenging the best the smartphone world has to offer. The HTC One is a premium product with exceptional power, but battery life is average.

The HTC One is a lot of smartphone, with a terrifically powerful processor, a stonkingly good screen and pretty good camera. But its premium spec comes at a premium price and with other high quality Androids like the Google Nexus 4 coming in at half the price, how many will want to stump up the extra ackers for just a few extra attributes?

The HTC One is an impressive device. Its screen and industrial design are now industry leading, and while its processor is impressive, it may be a bit overpowered (sacrilege!) as the punishment comes in the form of battery life.

How HandsetExpert Works: We don't run ads on the site, or charge users to use the site. The site is funded using commission links, where we may receive a commission if a phone or tariff is purchased via HandsetExpert. Our editorial, phone scoring and recommendation system and deal-finding algorithms are not affected by this; we are fiercely committed to providing unbiased, independent information.

Important notes

  • We aim to compare as many tariffs in the marketplace from the UK as possible. However, we do not include every package (e.g. legacy tariffs no longer available, or tariffs only available to existing/specific customers), nor do we detail every aspect of every tariff (e.g. international out of bundle rates, on-network minutes, etc).
  • SIM Only deals do not include plans shorter than 30 days or Pay As You Go rates.
  • We work really hard to get accurate prices from as many providers as possible, but some deals or providers may not be included; if there’s anything we’ve missed then please get in touch and let us know.
  • Whenever we can, we will let you know if a deal is time limited (such as a flash deal), and when the deal expires.
  • For tariffs which offer "unlimited" allowances, there may be times where traffic management or fair usage policies apply.
  • Additional charges for payment methods other than direct debit and for itemised/paper billing may apply.
  • Data only SIM cards, mobile broadband packages, and pay monthly tablets are currently not included in the comparison.
  • Out of bundle charges are not included in the calculation of Average Monthly Cost.
  • Contracts may not be available for some phone models in all colours and/or sizes, and a small number may only be available either as a pay monthly contract or a contract free handset, but not both.
  • Providers may increase the cost of your contract by RPI (inflation). However, if prices are increased that then cause a materially detrimental impact, you have the right to exit your contract without penalty. More details available from Ofcom plus comparative information on customer service and complaints handling & their guide on how to complain.
  • Ofcom runs a voluntary accreditation scheme for digital comparison tools (DCTs) for telephone, broadband and pay-TV, and has confirmed that this DCT meets the criteria for accreditation. For further details about the scheme, including the criteria that DCTs must meet, visit the price comparison page on the Ofcom website.
